From the recording Anthology
Here Are the Headlines begins with the urgent, percussive music typical of network newscasts of the 70s. In this case, the theme for Eyewitness News in L.A. served as inspiration. Hard rock guitar and the influence of progressive rock soon come together to make a biting cynical commentary on the political turmoil, and economic uncertainty of the late 70s. The main message is "show me a world where all are one... Here are the Headlines... it can't be done." When most of the news is dominated by negative events, it's difficult to have a positive outlook on the world. The song is notable for its unique arrangement, dynamic and jazzy solo section and the ending trumpet line which is a musical metaphor for that brief period of relative tranquility that sometimes happens in between all of the turmoil. In the end, however, voices are heard, the tape rewinds, and the opening theme begins anew. The tranquility never lasts for very long before the world seemingly erupts into chaos once again. Since this song was written, that reality hasn't changed a bit.
